A common challenge when growing native seeds is the need for cold moist stratification. This natural process mimics winter conditions, helping some seeds break dormancy and germinate. However, not all native plants require this step. Some species can germinate and thrive without the need for cold, moist treatment, making them much easier to grow.

Understanding Cold Moist Stratification for Seeds
Cold moist stratification is a seed treatment that simulates winter conditions by exposing seeds to cold temperatures and moisture for several weeks or months. This process helps break seed dormancy, a natural mechanism that prevents seeds from germinating during unfavorable conditions.
Many of our native plants rely on cold moist stratification because their seeds naturally fall to the ground in autumn and remain dormant through winter. When spring arrives, the cold period ends, and seeds are ready to sprout.
However, some native plants have seeds that do not require this cold period. These seeds can germinate immediately or after a short resting period without chilling.
