Unlike its yellow flowering cousins that are tolerant of heat and drought, pink tickseed prefers a moist soil and cooler temps. Its fine textured foliage and adorable pink flowers with yellow centers looks great with native plants that have a coarser appearance like Joe Pye Weed. It makes a great garden edger and it performs quite well as a cut flower too. Pink tickseed spreads by rhizomes (underground stems) and seed so it may be a little too aggressive for a small garden.
Maintenance: benefits from a shearing after the first flush of flowers
Benefits: nectar source, pollinators, usually deer and rabbit resistant, tolerates light foot traffic, birds eat the seeds
Noteworthy Cultivars: 'American Dream'
Companion Plants: Eutrochium species (Joe Pye weed), Monarda didyma (bee balm), Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed), Delphinium exaltatum (larkspur)
